  • By WILL GRAVES - AP National Writer

Shane Lowry tied a major championship record by firing a 9-under 62 in the third round of the PGA Championship. The 37-year-old Irishman recorded nine birdies without a bogey at a very gettable Valhalla to match the lowest round ever in any of the four major tournaments. Four players had previously posted a 62 across the PGA, Masters, British Open and U.S. Open, the latest by Xander Schauffele in the opening round on Thursday. Just over 48 hours later Lowry matched it to thrust himself into contention for his second major title. Member of Israel's War Cabinet says he'll quit the government June 8 unless there's a new war plan

  • By WAFAA SHURAFA, JOE KRAUSS and JACK JEFFERY - Associated Press

A popular centrist member of Israel’s three-man War Cabinet has threatened to resign from the government if it doesn’t adopt a new plan for the war in Gaza in the next three weeks. Benny Gantz' decision would leave Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu more reliant on far-right allies. His announcement Saturday escalates a divide within Israel’s leadership more than seven months into a war in which it has yet to accomplish its stated goals of dismantling Hamas and returning scores of hostages. Another War Cabinet member, Israel's defense minister, has said he would not remain in his post if Israel chooses to reoccupy Gaza. Georgia's president vetoes media legislation that has provoked weeks of protests

  • AP

Georgia’s president has vetoed the so-called “Russian law” targeting media that has sparked weeks of mass protests. The law would require media and non-governmental organizations to register as “pursuing the interests of a foreign power” if they receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad. President Salome Zourabichvili, who is increasingly at odds with Georgia’s ruling party, said Saturday that the proposed law contradicts Georgia’s constitution and “all European standards,” and added that it “must be abolished.” The ruling party, Georgian Dream, has a majority sufficient to override Zourabichvili’s veto, and is widely expected to do so in the coming days. As ethnic armed group claims to have captured a town in western Myanmar, Muslim Rohingyas flee again

  • By GRANT PECK - Associated Press

A powerful ethnic armed group fighting Myanmar’s military government in the country’s western state of Rakhine is claiming to have seized a town near the Bangladesh border, marking the latest victory for foes of the country’s military government. The state’s Muslim Rohingyas, targets of deadly army-directed violence in 2017, appear to have been the main victims of fighting in the town of Buthidaung, where the Arakan Army claims to have chased out forces of the military government. Information about the situation could not be verified independently, with access to the internet and mobile phone services in the area mostly cut off. The Arakan Army is the military wing of the Rakhine ethnic movement, which seeks autonomy from Myanmar’s central government. Golfer's prompt release from jail angers some who recall city's police turmoil

  • By DYLAN LOVAN - Associated Press

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler’s arrest and prompt release from a Kentucky jail is angering some who question whether he was given preferential treatment because of his fame. They recall what they consider malfeasance by the Louisville police department, which a national report last year found has used excessive force and invalid search warrants. And they wonder why Scheffler was released so quickly. Scheffler was arrested outside the Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning after allegedly injuring a police officer who was directing traffic. Scheffler was charged with felony assault but released without posting bond. Soon he was teeing off at the PGA Championship before a cheering crowd. An ultimatum raises pressure on Netanyahu to make postwar plans for Gaza, even as fighting rages

  • By JOSEPH KRAUSS - Associated Press

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under mounting pressure from his own War Cabinet and his country’s closest ally over postwar plans for Gaza. That's even as the war with Hamas shows no sign of ending anytime soon. On Saturday, Benny Gantz, a member of the War Cabinet and Netanyahu’s main political rival, said he would leave the government on June 8 if it did not formulate a new war plan including an international, Arab and Palestinian administration to handle civilian affairs in Gaza. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has said he would not agree to Israel governing Gaza itself. The United States wants a broader plan including a path to Palestinian statehood. 6 Penn students among 19 pro-Palestinian protesters arrested during attempt to occupy building

  • By RON TODT - Associated Press

Authorities say a half-dozen University of Pennsylvania students were among 19 pro-Palestinian protesters arrested during an attempt to occupy a building on campus. University police say seven remained in custody Saturday awaiting felony charges from Friday's incident, including one person who allegedly assaulted an officer. A dozen were issued citations for failing to disperse and follow police commands. They have been released from custody. The arrests came as other colleges across the country, anxious to prepare for commencement season, either negotiated agreements with students or called in police to dismantle protest camps. Sean 'Diddy' Combs abuse allegations: A timeline of key events

  • AP

New video aired by CNN appears to show Sean “Diddy” Combs beating his former singing protege and girlfriend Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. The video appears six months after Cassie, whose legal name is Cassandra Ventura, filed a lawsuit that set off a wave of similar cases. Ventura's lawsuit was settled the following day. But two more women filed lawsuits alleging sexual abuse from Combs about a week later. More lawsuits followed between December and February. In March, Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami were searched by federal authorities in a criminal investigation. Combs has denied all wrongdoing and is fighting the lawsuits. Security video appears to show Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs beating singer Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel hallway in 2016. The video obtained by CNN and aired Friday shows Combs punching and kicking Cassie, who was his girlfriend at the time. The video closely resembles the description of a 2016 incident described in a lawsuit filed by Cassie in November that alleged beatings and sexual abuse from Combs. The lawsuit was settled the following day, but several more followed from others along with a criminal sex-trafficking investigation. Representatives for Combs had no immediate comment on the footage, but he has previously denied the allegations in the lawsuits. Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters rally in Washington to mark a painful present and past

  • By ASHRAF KHALIL - Associated Press

Hundreds of protesters have rallied within sight of the U.S. Capitol, chanting pro-Palestinian slogans and voicing criticism of the Israeli and American governments. The demonstrators marked a painful present — namely the war in Gaza. And they marked a painful past — the exodus of some 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were forced from what's is now Israel when the state was created in 1948. About 400 demonstrators braved steady rains to rally on the National Mall on the 76th anniversary of what's called the Nakba. That's the Arabic word for catastrophe. There were calls in support of Palestinian rights and an immediate end to Israeli military operations in Gaza.
